"usually" is a big word. Since the context of the CreativeCow community is "primarily" professional users, I'm speaking in the context of professional and semi-professional users. In that context, "rarely" (as opposed to 'usually') will users be opting for greater compression in order to have more time in their recorded media.
True, AVCHD is a common format for HDD or MemStick media, but the bulk of users here on the COW are DV, HDV, XDCAM, XDCAM EX, XDCAM HD, Varicam, Beta SP, HVX users unless I'm seriously mistaken.
What Sony calls HDD camcorders and what the rest of the world refers to as HDD recording are two very different things. I'd be hard-pressed to classify a Z7 in the same category as an SR12, or to compare a Sony Z1 with M60 HDD unit in the same category as an SR10.

Looking at the various formats that access and use HDD devices such as the M60, FireStore, Edirol, and other HDD units, there are far more choices in the pro/prosumer arena than there are for HDD in the consumer arena.

hence my comment that it's not accurate to say that "usually" people are going to opt for higher compression rates.
We're arguing semantics, but with the context of *this* community in mind, I'd have to argue that 'rarely' are users opting for greater compression vs quality/length of recording.
