I believe the FX1 only shoots 1080i 29.97 HDV, so any camcorder supporting that format should be fine. I routinely swap tapes between my Sony FX7 and Canon HV20 cameras without issue.
At a trade show, I shot some footage with a V7U in 24p mode and I am unable to play that because my cameras don't support 24p.
You mentioned "getting back to New York" - you didn't happen to travel abroad and shoot in HDV PAL perhaps at 1080i 25?
