Newbie Question: Sony HVR-A1U stretching footage when recording directly to DVD

I have some HDV footage I need to get to DVD. I have a DVD recording deck and I'm using the HVR-A1U as a deck. The problem is the footage is being stretched out to 4:3 to fill the screen instead of the 16:9 it was shot in. I tried the Letterbox and squeeze outputs in the menu to no avail. Any ideas?
