Hi -- My wife and I produce short documentaries in remote areas (dimly lit at times) in south America.
I vote for the VX2100 (!) It is a fantastic camera and can take abuse without failing. Believe me, I know this first hand. We have used it in the Amazon jungle, the deserts of southern Peru and at altitudes over 14,000 feet as we hiked high into the Andes.
It never failed us....
We have recently switched to a Sony V1U and love it, though it is not as great for low light. However, the cmos imager is far superior to the ccd imager in the 2100. If you decide to get into HD later this is a good camera to consider. Remember, if you edit in HD it takes a lot longer to process the video and requires a lot more HD space.
But for now, with your situation, I recommend the VX2100. If you want to see footage produced by a VX2100 visit our website and watch "Markawasi" or "Flight". These were shot entirely on our VX2100.
I hope this helps : )
