DVCPRO output via Firewire and the DSR-2000A

What is the exact issue with DVCPRO/50/25 and Firewire? What hardware do you need to utilize acquisition and output via Firewire?
I have a Sony DVCAM DSR2000A that can playback DVCPRO, but when I try to acquire DVCPRO footage over the deck's Firewire port, no video is shown. I can acquire DVCPRO footage from this deck's SDI port, however.
I've been reading that the DVCPRO spec isn't the same as the DV/DVCAM spec. Is this is issue with DVCPRO and Firewire?
We also have a Panasonic AJ-HD1400 deck, and when I try to acquire DVCPRO/25 footage from that deck, my Premiere Pro CS3 workstation (on XP) says the "device is offline". I've also seen others report this problem.
Thoughts?
