DSR1500 - mini DV recording?

DSR1500 - mini DV recording?

I have a Sony DSR-1500 (not 1500A) deck with analog I/O board. It is supposed to be able to playback and record mini DV, but I can't find any menu item that will set the recording format.
Does it autosense the type of cassette that is inserted? When we record to a mini DV tape and play back it says "DVCam" on the front display.
Can anybody shed some light on this? Thanks!
