Well, for as little as some of these basic filters cost, it would not hurt to try one or two.

As for me, I own about 2 dozen "standard" Tiffen (and other brands) 58mm filters that I occasionally use on my PD150 (same size/type as your 2100).
I have UV filters, ProMist(s), Neutral Density (ND), Gradation ND, Daylight correction, Star effects, Fog effects, Viginette effects, etc.

I find that they work very well when I NEED certain effects ON THE CAMERA (many, however, can be done in the edit, so I don't need to "wreck" my master tape).

Sure, you can buy a pricey piece of glass to attach to the front of the camcorder, but this is not "Panavision 35mm film", you should be happy with standard-grade lens filters for your VX2100.

I do use a Canon WA58 wide angle adapter (similar to the Sony WA adapter that now is included with the Sony PD170) that virtually STAYS on the front of my camcorder at all times (unless I really need to zoom in tight from the back of an auditorium).
The WA will make a big difference in the overall coverage you can get in a single frame.
