Try it with a different font.

Something sans serf and simple, like Ariel.

This is just a wild guess, but Chalkboard as a typeface is built around rough outlines. So maybe X is trying to calculate and render all those rough outlines as they're tracking up the background - and perhaps that's taking a long time?

If you switch to a simpler font and it gets much faster, then the problem is likely font related.

One thing I've noticed is that X tries to be very precise about doing what you tell it to do. And something seemingly like a font choice may have a large impact on how the rasters have to be calculated.
