Well, since the command in FCPX for "detaching" the audio from the embedded video is called, BREAK APART CLIP ITEMS or alternatively DETACH AUDIO, you can see why I misunderstood you. The feature you're describing is called, "expand audio/video"
I guess I don't really see the problem. Not every clip needs a J or L cut and since you can lasso a bunch of clips and expand them all at once, I don't see the current configuration as particularly troublesome.
