Thanks Gentlemen! The problem wasn't opening a compound clip per se, but combining multiple clips.

so the flow would be 1.project/timeline: make compound clip 2. copy and paste it from that timeline. 3. Close timeline, open new timeline, and paste it there. Right? I'm really quite slow at this!
