Yes, Director is fast, and one popular use for it nowadays is actually prototyping. You can make a 'dummy' application so fast and se if the interactivity is OK for instance, before you move on with develping say a web applicattion with Java...
There isn't any 'society' anymore for Director users here. I know the very popular "Kapten sabeltann" game was made with it, and so 3D power users will always be welcome...
There is a definite demand for good programmers, but I'm not sure what they're looking for in particular. My guess would be that .NET and Java is very safe work now, but indeed perhaps PhP and JS too.
