Hey Neil --

Maybe it's your adapter. I don't have the LBD, but I have a pegasus raid, and I daisy my secondary monitor off it. I use the apple displayport->DVI converter, which is directly plugged into the 2nd thunderbolt port on the back of the pegasus RAID and it works like a charm without any slowdown.

Your setup sounds identical except for the older generic adapter.
