Hi — I work for EditShare, and am the primary “voice” behind things like the
@ESLightworks &
@EditShare accounts on Twitter, our
Facebook page, et al. I'm just seeing this discussion now.
The summary by Oliver Peters is essentially correct, to a point: Lightworks has had a number of owners over the years until, most recently, having been acquired along with GeeVS by EditShare in 2009. A big part of the reason why we bought Lightworks was that it was & is a great system and we didn't want to see it die, but rather wanted to modernize it, make it available on multiple operating systems, and see what a new generation of people would like to do with it.
Our plan was & remains to make the core of Lightworks into an open source project, in the Linux / Mozilla / Apache / etc sense of the term as people generally understand it: source code will be available, regular people will be able to modify it &/or contribute back to the official version, people can fork it or port it to new platforms, etc. We aren't trying to be cute about the terminology, or misleadingly piggyback on the good will people have toward open source software in general.
Originally, we wanted to have the open source release out by now, but we've had to revise our
roadmap, and the open source version has been delayed, but it has
not been abandoned. (You may note that, since it became clear that the time table needed to be revised, we have generally stopped referring to Lightworks as an “open source project” in the current tense on Twitter, Facebook, etc. It
will be open source in due course, but we can't honestly call it that
yet, so we've been trying to be clear about this.)
An updated schedule & other details for the open source release are not yet available, but we'll post such information to the
Lightworks roadmap page as soon as it becomes available, along with the social media sites noted above.
Please let us know if you have any questions, either here, at Twitter or Facebook, or at our
Lightworks Forum site.
And thank you for your interest in Lightworks! :-)
