Quick Release Systems

I'm looking to use a quick release system across any compact camcorders or DSLRs that I might use. Does anyone have any recommendation as to the best systems?

It seems like Manfrotto makes a few different models and I've found a variety of other options from RedRock, Sachtler, and others.

I'm looking for a system where the plates can live on my cameras and the plates can live on tripods, mounts, and rigs. I want to eliminate the step of swapping out different mounts for different items.
