It is definitely a good idea on paper, not really that hard to implement. The only concern would be your bandwidth & network speed in/out of your facility. if you have a lot of traffic already, or just a standard business connection you are going to get a real loss of QOS for your daily users or if you have multiple clients uploading/downloading at the same time.
It might be a penny wise/pound foolish decision if your clients cannot access their material or the connection gets so slow it is not useable. But if you have a robust connection then go for it, and save the cash of a hosted FTP server.
