Hi Jeff,
You are correct that you cannot use your Promise storage as part of your "online" EditShare system. However, we are working on ways to allow customers to use their "legacy" storage as part of Flow and Ark. For example, if you have 80 TB of clips "archived" on your XSAN system, the idea is to allow you to keep those clips on the XSAN, scan them with Flow to get them into the Flow database and to make proxy files, and then let you browse and tag and search them in Flow and restore them via Ark -- even do partial file restoration to your "online" EditShare storage.
We are already doing exactly that with a large news broadcaster who has EMC2 storage. If you can export your XSAN storage via SMB (i.e., like a Windows networking network volume), Flow and Ark can see it. There is a modest fee to use 3rd party storage with Flow and Ark, but if you already have a big hunk of storage, it's certainly worth leveraging it for archival use.
Later this year, we hope to be able to directly mount your XSAN storage via the StorNext client, as that will be more performant than using a SMB mount. But SMB is okay as a stopgap solution.
Please feel free to call us for more information.
