Hello Todd and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum,

Compressors can pack a little, knocking back a bit of what's sticking out, but what probably happening is the mic is in a bad position to pickup a better mix or the conductor has a weird sense of mix.

Try standing behind the conductor. See if the mix sounds any better.
