clip works half way

I got a video clip from a friend and it's an .avi file. PP 1.5 told me it was an unsupported format so I downloaded a free format converter and tried a few different codecs. It's now xvid. It plays fine in the left monitor as a clip in the bin, but when I drag the clip to the timeline it's black with no audio. Anyone have any idea what's going on here? Thanks!
