The best way to adjust volume in Premiere

Hey, I'm a little new to PPRO so sorry if this is a stupid question.

I want to adjust my volume levels dynamically on a per clip basis while I'm listening to the audio. (This is for clips already in a sequence.)

My problem is, it seems the only way to adjust the volume while the clip is playing is to adjust it in the Effects Control panel. Which isn't a problem for me except for the fact that it always keyframes all of my adjustments. I have to unclick the stopwatch to remove the keyframes everytime.

Is there another way to do this? I can't adjust volume using the rubberband on the timeline because everytime I touch it the clip stops playing.
