I think that you misread Jon Barrie, John.
From what I just read, he didn't say it couldn't be done. He told you how it could be done and the method he'd use to do it. He also touched on the psychology of vision and the brain.
You may wish to rethink what he said as there is no video editing software that is going to know what to do in automating aq fine-tuning of the visual-to-audio syncing in your project -- it is going to take a human being. And regardless of what tool you use, it is going to come down to that.
