CS3 "Unknown recorder error"

Just installed Premiere Pro CS3 on Mac OSX 10.4.11 Dual-core Intel. Trying to capture via firewire with two different cameras, the Canon XH-A1 and the Canon HV20, both in HDV and in DV and with 60i and 24F each (every combination of which with separate capture settings). I can control the deck from the capture panel but cannot see the footage (and as I found, HDV footage won't show on PPro3 on Macs anyway, but it's also not showing up on 4:3 SD tapes). Upon hitting record in the capture panel, the video plays, but it will not capture a single frame. Upon hitting the record button again to stop capture, I am given the error messages, "unknown recorder error" in HDV and "No frames were captured" in DV. I have no capture problems in Premiere Pro 2 on Windows (which I am running on the same system via bootcamp).
This is very frustrating. I've been searching the web all afternoon/evening and all I can find are solutions for Premiere Pro 1.5 on Athlon AMD computers. But what about CS3 on this Intel Mac?
Thank you.
