Which dissolve? Use the Cross Dissolve for the smoothest fades.
If this does not give you good results (which it always has with my projects) then you could just overlap the two clips on two different layers, and then set 2 opacity keyframes on the top clip and make it go from 0% to 100%. That will do the same thing as a fade.
Check also the quality setting on your program monitor window on your machine, (right click on the program monitor) make sure it is set to high quality,and then make sure to render your footage.
