Ripple delete suddenly unavailable?

Ripple delete suddenly unavailable?

I am editing a project which has a huge number of imported stills...when editing in the timeline I like to right click on any un-needed frames and select ripple delete...it very conveniently moves everything over...however suddenly i find that the ripple delete is greyed out(unavailable)...
any ideas as to why this is the case....and also if i delete the frame with the delete key and then use my mouse in the now empty space then again ripple delete is not available!
