APP2 Upgrade Ideal System

Can anyone give me some advice on how to migrate to HDV (Sony) for post production? I now use a Dell XPS system running 3.4 gig single processor. 4 gig ram, 500 gig drives. I'm editing SD with APP 1.5 want to move to APP 2.0. I use AAE and do a lot of layering. Do I have to change motherboards go dual processor. What third party cards will give me the most flexibility and THE MOST RELIABILITY?? Any ideas on a strategy to attack this project?
