Is this your main footage or is it to go into an existing SD timeline. Why not edit in HD otherwise and then downconvert the final to SD.
There are lots of good ways to do this and a search of the forum will give you all the options. So rather than convert all footage, just consider converting the final so there aren't "days of render".
