We had the same audio glitch: distorted and loud, sometimes just plain silence.

The project originated from FCP7 and xml'ed to PPro. We opened up the project folder in a Finder window and deleted everything from the project except for the media. We got rid of preview files,media cached files, .assoc files, etc. PProCS6 re-created the necessary files and everything worked fine after that.

Starting a CS6 project from scratch works great.
