Sorry John, i simply don't buy that line of thinking. I have been a film editor around the world for over 40 years. At the beginning I struggled hugely with the basics, couldn't sync sound and image to save myself :) however I persevered and stumbled along for 4 years and then one day the concept of story telling seemed to hit me in the face. I left all the technical stuff to assistants and focussed purely on the story telling, communication aspects of film. That doesn't mean that I wasn't on the cutting edge of technology but it was the big picture view of what the technology could do rather than know how it worked. That is what we seem to have lost, we now want our editors to be tech heads as well as being creative, these two halves of the brain are not always in sympathy :) I continue to struggle today with the actual technical aspects of computerized editing. I simply want to edit and tell stories but here in the deep south aka New Zealand, there is very little technical support. Everyone one wants to be creative without realizing that technicians are creative in what they do. Just my thoughts as I slowly ingest 220 hours of tape :)
