You guys are being either too nice or too lucky. May be the reason is most of you are from the States where filmmaking is still a commercially driven industry so everybody making a movie has at least some respect for the audience. In too many places movies are made just because there is a line "national film" in that country's budget every year. In those places you may hear something like "I wouldn't shoot close-ups at all but the actors where expensive so I had to" or "This time I realized if I actually do some blocking it doesn't matter how they perform" from directors with half a dozen features and many awards on their lists. There is no place for art in editing what they shoot. Struggling with actors not hitting marks and forgetting lines, with DP breaking lighting continuity between shots, with plot deserving little more than twenty minutes of screen time and with characters you neither understand any motivations of nor feel any empathy towards takes all the editing craft you have but very little art.
