Yes. They can have a motivation, but don't work unless they do. In narratives they are becoming very scarce, as they really don't reflect the human experience as well as a fade to black and back I think. They usually slow things down in narratives for sure.
Pretty much, things said as absolutes usually aren't quite right, but it stirs discussion...
