Interesting too is the fact that some creative advancements are born out of necessity and not inherent genius. The French New Wave directors worked with shoe string budgets. Dissolves and fades took longer and cost more money. So they dispensed with them and changed filmmaking.

As you mentioned the technical side is emphasized. This occurs, not only because it’s clearly definable, but because the people teaching don’t have enough aesthetic knowledge. Aesthetics is more subjective and a moving target. This problem has been around for a long time. When I went to school we were marked on 3 point lighting ratios and told never to cut on a move. But I was lucky enough to have some great mentors (huge industry heavyweights) when I entered the real world-where I got my real education. It doesn’t happen enough.

So if it’s not being taught, it’s not being learned and if it’s not being learned, productions are going lack.
