I also think people don't look before they leap into this industry. There are people everywhere entering this area because of the explosion of production driven by the crashing costs of equipment and distribution.
However, the tech gets in their way. They need to actually invest in learning it.
A fledgling editor, not only has to learn the UI and it's settings, this person has to also be able to learn a lot of technology... most folks spending 1-3k for software out there don't have IT guys for help at all. There's a lot of NLE technology to understand and learn.
