Of course the difficulty of writing an app depends on the complexity of the app. Ragardless, there is nothing easy in writing any Objective-C or C++ programs. Both languages are C derived, which means that memory management is tricky and needs to be handled by a pro or you end up with memory leaks. UI design is also a biggie, a field where 80% of development time will go. UI is the big black hole of software development, even with the UI builder included in the iPhone SDK.
Regardless, any C-derived language requires skills and a lot of experience, it's the nature of the beast and probably one of the reasons why Apple made it a requirement. It automatically filters out people with less experience in software development.
