I don't know if this answers your question, but what I do is complete the first part of a scene, something like a simple shot/action in a movie. Then add a second scene in the same file. Do what I want to do in that shot/action, rinse and repeat. You still have the first action and any subsequent action in any subsequent scenes should you want to make any changes. When your entire "act" is completed, just composite each scene with the video linear editor, or use a video editor like Vegas or Premier . Hope this helps.
