Ok, problem solved! Never mind all the griping, I've been put in my place now. I've got it working just like 2.49 did, it just wasn't set by default like before. Feel a bit dense for spouting off about it so much, but I only have so much time to spend with it and I could either get work done in 2.49 or get frustrated looking for settings, and I kept choosing to work with what was working for me.

The main problem ended up simply being not knowing where to find the preferences, which is just what was identified above, so thanks to Bartek! I knew if I could find the equivalent to the drag down the top of the screen options I might figure out what was wrong.

It's in the preferences (command+ , ) under the "input" tab. I thought at first it was in the list of individual functions, but that seems strangely un-settable. It's in the options on the left- "emulate 3 button mouse"

Once I set that, all the control options I've gotten accustomed to were back, so it seems there's no more obstacles to getting more familiar with what's new and improved and join everyone else who've long ago switched their attention to the 2.5's. Maybe anyone else who prefers this control method found out where the preferences panel was moved to easier than I did (or had more time and patience to look for it).
