I'm creating captions for the first time on an indie documentary, using MacCaption.
As documentaries go, interviewees don't speak with perfect grammar.
I'm finding that translating them literally will often not make sense to people that cannot hear them talking. Things like stumbling over their words or run-on sentences.
Do captions have to be 100% accurate? Or do we have flexibility to rephrase to get the same meaning? Are there guidelines for this type of thing?
Also, we will be using the English captions as a basis for over 15 language subtitles. So it's essential we do it right the first time :)
Thanks!
