3D monitor on a laptop
by Paul Wakefield on Oct 11, 2009 at 6:28:06 am

3D location monitor for less than £100
Intro

Frustrated by prices I came up with this while looking for a 3D location monitor, despite extensive research I have not see this posted anywhere.Costs less than £100.

This works using your existing laptop ( yeah I know I said 'under £100' but what I really meant was under £100 using your laptop) The top camera can be flipped if shooting with the SB rig and side by side works equally as well.

You need 2 X DVR's plugged into separate USB ports ( and a component out with extension cable from the cameras) + a pair of anaglyph glasses.
( anaglyph is a dead dinosaur.. true but it still has its uses)
Download stereo multiplexer and stereoscopic player from 3DTV, set the muxer to 640X480 resolution and PAL format (or whichever TV standard you want) Start the player and select line interlace, this gives a better picture for line ups.

The SB rig mirror and camera positions are easily set. Once aligned switch to anaglyph view and adjust stereo base for the required 3D depth (using a calculator to check base is not a bad thing)

If your laptop is fast enough you will monitor in real time, admittedly in anaglyph which is far from perfect, however the picture quality is good enough to align and set base for comfortable 3D viewing. Its worth noting the subject material in CU shot is 4" in diameter and height indicating how close these SB rigs can shoot without eyestrain.
Is this good enough for professional use? - You can be the judge. Resolution is not high enough to see marks or dirt spots on the camera lens and viewing in anaglyph always leaves one with a sense of disappointment, not least due to the colour inaccuracy. There is no substitute for quality and the superbright 3D view is unarguably that until, however, 3D location monitor prices come down , this is a good alternative.

Shot in a 7'X7' space using 2 Panasonic HPX171 camcorders for 3D.

Stereoscopic Multiplexer is free but watermarked, a licence can be purchased for 59 euro. The free version of Stereoscopic Player will only play for 5 minutes, licence to unlock for unlimited play time is 39 euro.

If you can't see land then its likely you're lost at sea,
