Recently I was able to fulfill a quest to buy an old Toaster system for a few reasons. Mainly, to convert a few old transitions to mattes for modern software. I recently re-edited some old projects from college and couldn't replicate a few of the transitions for nostalgia's sake.
So, last night I captured all the transitions I wanted and began making matte versions in AE. One of them was a jigsaw puzzle flying in. However, as with all Toaster transitions, the video doesn't fly in with the puzzle pieces. The video is static and the transition is just a reveal.
My AE knowledge is growing but nowhere near "tutorial level," but I thought this was something I could tackle - animating in new video over top of old video as flying puzzle pieces. And, in the spirit of "community" that we're trying to engender around here, I thought I'd offer up the AEP file to download, in case you want this cheesy effect for your own stuff. Things have been awfully prickly around here and hopefully some goodwill will go a long way.
Here is a sample version starring my dog.

Obviously, the "Transparent Background" text layer would be your video that is transitioning to the dog footage. Here is the AEP file:

Also obviously, this transition wouldn't do you much good if it was always of my dog, so no footage is included. Just launch the AE file and it'll complain about not finding the footage. Replace with your footage and plop it into the "footage" comp. Then render the "puzzle pieces" comp. Match that up with your original footage on your time line in your editor and voila! You now have a super cheesy Video Toaster effect from 1990. Perfect for your upcoming retro music video project.
Enjoy!
