custom lookup for asset status

So the built-in lookup for the status field isn't totally relevant to us so I created my own. It works great in the Asset pane of the upload and info windows however the lookup isn't at all referenced when I use the Status data elsewhere.

For example, I want to create a metadata subscription to the Status but now that I've changed the lookup of the Status field, the subscriptions are ignored.

Don't tell me there's no way to use custom metadata in subscriptions or have I missed something?
