Need render if XDCAM EX video overlaps on multiple tracks

Dear Forum,
I'm editing a short doc using XDCAM EX 60i footage and am having a number of issues.
1. The playback in FCP appears jerky, like it's dropping frames, even though my sequence settings match the clip properties. I watched the imported QTs in Quicktime, and there the motion is smooth. I'm cutting on a 2x2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Mac with 6GB of RAM.
2. This one kills me: All the clips come in with a green render line even though the clips are effect free.
The sequence requires render (red) if 2 video clips overlap on multiple tracks. Even if I trim the top layer so that the tracks no longer overlap, the part that at some point DID overlap needs render.
In other words, I can't cut on multiple tracks. I may as well use iMovie at this point!
I'd really appreciate anyone's thoughts on this...
Thanks
Ana
