That's not built in, but is supported for third-party tools. I have yet to see a tool which taps into this feature. (originally, this was one of the features listed before release, called the clip selection tool) Once we get cooking, and I get my training this month, I'll try writing something myself. I'm an applescripter from way back, but I'm a bit rusty and this is a much more complicated db than I've interfaced to (limited pretty much to Access and FMP).

Developer extensions
The open architecture of Final Cut Server has been extended to offer new options to developers. You can now write a script or program to bring in existing browse proxies and thumbnails at the same time you catalog an asset. You can also import and export annotations along with other asset metadata in the XML file.
