My Apple Pro Apps Support rep is pretty sure you cannot perform Edit In Place editing on a mounted SMB volume. I've been trying to get that to work all last week and that's the word I got yesterday. It needs to be (or appear to be, as in a SAN) a local volume.

In my test deployment I used mounted Windows servers for everything, and when you go to edit with an asset it caches it (copies it) locally.
