AE is not an editing program, it doesn't allow you to playback in real-time until it has rendered the frames that you want to playback. Even if it's just video, AE needs to render it first. Use RAM Preview to render and cache frames in RAM (limited by the amount of RAM you have) and then play them back in real time. The keyboard shortcut to RAM Preview is the 0 on the numpad.
