[gregory wilson] "disc utility sees the drive but won't let me mount it."

Have you tried restarting in the Mac OS with the drive connected?

Have you made a backup yet? I know, you probably use the 500GB drive for backups...but if you haven't backed up yet, do.

Also, you mentioned bus-powered. Does the drive come with an AC adapter? If so, you might give that a try.

I assume that after your attempt to mount it that you let Disk Utility try to repair it? Repair Permissions too? (I'm shocked at how often permissions cause trouble.)

If you have tried both of those and still no luck, you might need to look into a commercial disk utility. My favorite is Disk Warrior...which unfortunately is $99. There are others out there, and maybe somebody here can recommend one...but I'm afraid that that's about it for me...
