Cross platform nightmare

I hate this crazy world of portable and external hard drives! I can read a Mac EXT-HD on my G5 running OSX-10.49,
but if I hook a Windows NTFS portable hard drive up to the G5 It mounts and is readable but it says "read only" in its "get info" tab. The same drive on Windows XP says it is completely open to everyone, but on the G5 it says "ead only."
I'm thinking the Mac says that because it can't write to NTFS anyway so it just throws up a smoke screen of saying the drive is read only. More and more jobs are coming in like today--a portable Mac drive with data the client wants on a windows drive. I can read the Mac drive and move it to my Mac raid but no way is the Mac going to let me move it to a NTFS drive.
I wind up having to go through our network which takes longer than a turtle crawling to the Olympics from Cleveland! Help!
