In Illustrator CS 4 (and I think 5) on Mac, the fonts are only previewed from the Character Menu and Character Panel, but NOT the control panel.



If that doesn't take care of it, you might want to check that you have Font Preview enables in the Type Preference pane (ILLUSTRATOR > PREFERENCES > TYPE > FONT PREVIEW).
