Issue with drop shadow 'running over' the edges of multiple images.

I'm working on a logo, and am having an issue where multiple drop shadows are going beyond the edge of where I want them to stop, to where you can see the shadow over layers underneath. I tried to create a clipping mask, but it tells me that the top image must be a path, compound shape or text object.

Any ideas?
