RAM and crashing problems with large Batch or "Render Video"

Hi all,
does anyone know what kind of setting I might be missing?
I'm trying to process video clips in Photoshop (I have a particular filter that only exists for PS, not AE), and all types of "Render Video" export I choose result in crashes after a few hundred frames. I've now resorted to pre-rendering the clips as image sequences out of AE and having PS do a Batch Process on them (which is twice as slow, but I though perhaps less prone to crashing), but there too, it stops after maybe 500 frames saying it's out of RAM.
What gives? I'm using CS4 10.0.1 on a MacPro with 8GB of RAM
Thanks,
LMN
