How do you paste a image into a layers layer mask??

I'm using CS2 and I can't work out how to paste a bitmap image into a layer mask?

I thought I could just CTRL-C the image I want, then click on the layers layer mask and CTRL-V it but it just creates a new layer instead?

Any help appreciated.
