Broadcasting live on the net

Hi all,
I'm trying to understand the process involved in broadcasting live videos on the internet. My goal is to understand how/if I can hook a camera to a computer and broadcast the live event on the net with good quality (I know some stuff about different qualities but not the nitty gritty details -- what I mean by good quality, is basically somewhere along the lines of SD).
I want to know if a video with that quality can be sent via the internet connection to a server where it can then be broadcasted to different viewers or not. Does the data need to go through Satellite? or is the internet connection enough?
Any pointers that can get me rolling with my research will be much appreciated. If you know of any good sites that address these issues, please reference them since I believe I am the one who should do the research.
Thank you all in advance,
Rokham
