thanks for the responses guys. yes the RR is almost $5000, and yes a new Quad is $2500. getting another computer isnt a big deal. but i was more surprised than anything to read that it wouldnt work with another capture card. i thought people were using the RR to do 4k onlines. but its so hard to figure out what RED stuff does based on what's written on their website.
this is probably the wrong forum for this, but do you think it would work well in our Mac Pro SAN server? that way it would be connected to the SAS storage directly, and not on a system that would access it via gigabit. so the card would be able to transcode a bit faster than if running over gigabit. the server is our main transcoder for that reason, also one of the reasons we bought an 8 core instead of a quad for the server.
